I just finalized my ballot. There are seven races on my card, from President down to school board. I voted for two Democrats, a Republican, a Green, an Independent and a Red Sox DH. How's that for splitting your ticket? The school board was non-partisan (hey 'wicks, vote Lucy Mota-Costa). Also I'm approving 9 out of 14 referenda. I was going to follow the strong, steady leadership of George W. Bush and vote for all the borrowing referenda because my kids, not I, will have to pay for it, but I decided to show a little restraint.
isn’t it discusting how much money they want to spend on fluff??
Let the goddamned colleges pony up their own money for new dorms… they charge an arm and a leg to live there… put the f’n money to use to improve the college!
So you actually voted for Ortiz for President? I don’t know whether I’m amused (RI is safe and it’s funny) or outraged (this election is too serious to spoof with, even in RI).
Here in New Haven, I voted a straight Democratic ticket except for Registrar of Voters. We’re required by law to have a R and D Registrar of Voters so the Green guy was no threat to anybody, and if he makes the 3rd registrar he’ll spend his time organizing the minority neighborhoods and other underrepresented types. And I went to school with him.
kerry, jindall, and vitter here.
If Mota-Costa wasn’t teaming up with Joyce Andrade to make sure the teachers get nothing in contract negotiations, and then take the blame for dragging it out, I’d vote for her because she’s very straight forward. I like that. Of course, I would also like a contract sometime before retirement and the union is more than willing to make some sacrifices, but not back down to all the school committee’s demands.
My $0.02
Yeah Jim, I voted aginst the dorms and the Meade facility, but for the open space and restoration stuff (fluff?). I calculated that I voted for 80% of the spending. I don’t have a ideological opposition to state borrowing, though.
Grace, I voted for Papi in my state senate race, because the incumbant was running unopposed. I’ve been dying to vote for the Democrat in the presidential race since 2002. And it felt good to do so today.
UnLu, I’m surprised that Mota-Costa, a former teacher, is squeezing the teachers. But I don’t pretend to have any insight into the negotiations here, so thanks for that comment.
Good, glad to straighten that out. Funny, my state senator was running unopposed too … but one of the drawbacks of CT’s sensible mechanical voting machines is that it’s not worth the bother to do a write-in.
One of the drawbacks of being a retired teacher, is remembering how good it used to be. Back when co-pay wasn’t an issue. Back when lengthening the school day to 7 hours wasn’t an issue (without a pay increase as well). Back when the population as a whole wasn’t morbidly obese but the first thing we’ll cut now is physical education to make room for more literacy classes…but instead of working on learning how to read at home, I beat Grand Theft Auto in ONLY 8 HOURS!! Looking at things from a teachers point of view and a taxpayers point of view are polar opposites. Mota-Costa backs Andrade who believes there is no middle ground. That’s what negotiations are, a compromise, not a list of demands.
Regarding the athletic facilities… it’s called a bake sale, get to know it.
Came across the postings by “undisclosed lurker ” regarding the contract negotiations with the Warwick Teachers Union. Don’t know where people get their information from! I have been attempting to negotiate a fair and equatable contract that the taxpayer can afford. Anyone that follows the process (and the facts) will see that our current offer would make the teachers in Warwick #2 in the state.
If anyone is interested in what we are actually offering, please take the time to check out the School Dept. website. (Warwickschools.org).
P.S.
Bill, no one is “squeezing the teachers”
