I haven't been around in a while, but Bil figured this subject warrants posting. Grey Day is a protest against big record companies(EMi) that are trying to stop independant artists like DangerMouse from creating their own projects with copyrighted music. Danger Mouse mixed Jay Z's "Black Album" (not one of my favorite artists) with the Beatle's "White Album" and came up with the "Grey Album" The project was shared online between a couple friends and now thanks to the power of the Aol, it has spread everywhere. EMi ain't to happy about all this poop. They have been sending out cease and desist letters all over the place. LAME - kinda understand/not really. Many sites are supporting the independent artist by posting the free mp3s, chaning their graphics to a grey, or linking to greytuesday.org. My take on the whole thing: Free music = :thumbup" and it sounds pretty cool, but on the other hand I am confused, I thought stealing commercial music through P2P was the only real prob - sharing is such a convoluted word. I hate all this shit, I just want my 13 bucks, for price fixing on CDs in the 90s so I can buy the new Chappelle Show DVD. Either way it's something different & cool to check out. Grey Day /// Tuesday Feb24th

Ben Folds, who I've loved since E-dogg and I saw live at the (soon to be gone) Met Cafe, put out a couple of 5 song EPs that I just downloaded off iTunes. The songs are decent, but I wanted to highlight one that I really like. There's a track called "All U Can Eat" (don't ask me why it's a U. I hate that shit.) It's about our wicked overconsumptive ways (that was wicked like the witch, not the New England adjective). Ben says "i've always said i'd write one love song and one political song. i think this is about as political as i care to be in my music." Here's the lyrics:
Son look at all the people in this restaurant What do you think they weigh? Look out the window to the parking lot at their SUVs taking all of the space They give no fuck they talk as loud as they want They give no fuck just as long as there's enough for them Gonna get on the microphone down at Wal-Mart Talk about some shit that's been on my mind Talk about the state of this great nation of ours People, look to you left, yeah, look to your right They give no fuck they buy as much as they want They give no fuck just as long as there's enough for them So I look at the people lining up for plastic I'd like to see 'em in the National Geographic Squatting bare-assed in the dirt eating rice from a bowl With a towel on their head or maybe a bone in their nose See that asshole with the peace sign on his license plate Giving me the finger and running me out of his lane God made us number one cause he loves us the best Well maybe he should go bless someone else for a while, give us a rest Everyone can see We've eaten all that we can eat
Good stuff. ADDENDUM: while I was writing this post, Em just happened to IM me with the fact that Rhode Islanders generate 4,000 tons of trash EVERY DAY. That's crazy. My roommates fill up a trash bag every other day or so, it's ridiculous. It's good to see we're all taking Bad Religion's axiom to heart: "it's never really what you own, but what you threw away" _________________________________________________________________ Related: I've been sitting on this link for a while now, but this is an appropriate post to throw it out on. Take this Ecological Footprint Quiz to see how many Earths-worth of resources you'd need if everyone lived like you. We'd need 4 and a half planets if there were 6 billion Bils.

Ben Folds and some Trash Talk

Better late than never folks. I'm Nightwing (bet you forgot I had posting rights) and this is my top 10.5 albums of 2003.

10.5) Against Me! - As The Eternal Cowboy - the best 23 minutes of punk rock this year. That's the problem though, it rocks but barely registers because it is over before you even know it. That being said, Against Me! is my new favorite band - check out their back catalog.

10.) The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow - Insanely tight low-fi pop. Great variety, great lyrics, great CD.

9.) The Postal Service - Give Up / Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlanticism - Ben Gibbard is the best songwriter in rock right now and if that wasn't enough he has the best singing voice as well. 2 very different albums - Give Up is a synth pop album and Transatlanticism is an indie rock concept album. Both are must haves. Very excited to see Death Cab at Lupos in a few months.

8.) The Lawerence Arms - The Greatest Story Ever Told - I feel the same about this CD as I did when I discovered Maybe I'll Catch Fire by the Alkaline Trio - I wish every pop punk album sounded like this. Smarter than any punk CD released in years. Great ballance between the unique styles of the 2 vocalists.

7.) RX Bandits - The Resignation - The only ska CD that mattered this year. This CD was tracked live and has an amazing raw sound because of it. RXB are the best band in the US that will never hit it big.

6.) Thrice - Artist in the Ambulance - I found their old stuff unlistenable but this CD does the trick for me. Thrice finally finds out how to write good songs rather than good parts of songs. This CD rocks balls out all the way through.

5.) Constantines - Shine A Light - Sweet lord this is a great album. It sounds like Springsteen meets Fugazi if you can believe that. The rules don't apply to this band - they are all over the place here, in a very good way. Both smart and extremely badass. A rare thing indeed.

4.) Rancid - Indestructible - An all time best from one of my all time favorite bands. A wide variety of punk rock styles creates the most accessible album Rancid has ever recorded. Not quite as smart as 'Life Won't Wait' but so much more fun.

3.) Thursday - War All The Time - 'Screamo'? Sure. But who cares - Thursday is the only Screamo band that really matters. May have the best openening and closing tracks of any album ever. An amazing CD but I think it only hints at what is to come from this band. Catch them live too - the along with Andrew WK they put on the best live act I saw all year.

2.) Brand New - Deja Entendu - This album makes their last CD (which was a great pop punk disc) completely irrelevant. Don't know what else I can say about this CD except that it is damn near perfect. While they are the best tracks on the album, the two singles (Sic Transit Gloria...Glory Fades / The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows) don't even scratch the surface of what is on here.

1.) The Weakerthans - Reconstruction Site - Already one of my favorite albums of all time. Varied in style and divided by a three part song running through the album, this CD makes me feel smarter every time I listen to it. Sometimes pop, sometimes rock, sometimes punk, sometimes alt-country, always well written character driven songs. I would suggest this album to anyone. Essential.

All told, it was a great year for music.

So what do you guys think? I would love to see some other top ten lists in the comment threads. And check this out too - http://www.songfight.org/blue/ it's pretty cool.
